As a therapeutic modality, ultrasound is a form of heat therapy for soft tissue injuries to minimize swelling and pain, reduce muscle spasms, and expand the range of motion. Creating high frequency sound waves, ultrasound reaches deep into an injured area, creating heat that pulls blood into the area in order to boost the healing process.
Ultrasound is administered gently with a handheld soundhead, that uses strokes or circles over the affected area. An ultrasound gel may be administered during the ultrasound therapy session. The role of an ultrasound is to expedite your healing time and reduce your pain.
Research Studies
In one study, the adding of ultrasound to exercise treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis relief decreased the amount of analgesic consumption by the patients. (1)
