EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS TESTED
The aim of this preposed study is to analyze whether adding an exercise program to an educational program can enhance walking capacity in sufferers with lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. This is a randomized controlled clinical trial with 60 participants who will be randomly allocated to either the control group or the intervention group. The intervention group will get an educational program plus an exercise program, while the control group will only get the educational program. The primary outcome measure is walking capacity, while the secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of life. (1) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn knows our Ashburn and Herndon spinal stenosis patients are very interested in these outcomes!LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH NEUROGENIC CLAUDICATION
Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a condition that produces narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back region, which in turn puts pressure on the nerves. This can lead to pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In really bad cases, it can also make walking quite difficult. The condition is most common in people over 50 years old. These are just the people in Ashburn and Herndon who need to keep (or at least begin) exercising!
THE EXERCISES
The particular exercises that will be utilized in this study are made to improve walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine. The hope is that by doing these exercises regularly, patients will experience less pain and disability and experience a better quality of life.
THE CONTROL GROUP
The control group in this trial will only receive an educational program about their condition and how to control it. While education is important, it is not typically enough on its own to deliver significant relief from symptoms. That's why adding exercise is so important. It involves the back pain patient in his or her relief! Listen to this PODCAST with Dr. Michael McMurray on The Back Doctors Podcast with Dr. Michael Johnson as he details The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management for lumbar spinal stenosis.
