Ashburn and Herndon Chiropractic Care of Headache and Tips for Headache and Migraine Prevention
Headaches and migraines are unwelcome visitors. Headache sufferers are usually quite ready for tips on how to prevent them. Migraine (a primary headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves members of a global community with migraine being a foremost cause of disability. (1) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn offers some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas just for our Ashburn and Herndon headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet feeds the body and the mind. Researchers have noted that migraine triggers appear in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary. A high-quality diet effectively helps handle migraine. Further, and more expressly, women with chronic migraine had a poorer quality diet than that of women who experienced episodic migraine. (2) Another study was even more specific with the type of diet helpful to migraine patients, specifically overweight folks. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found to be preventive of episodic migraines. Usefulness was noted within one month of the diet change. (3) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn is not recommending that any of our patients begin a specific diet now! If a Ashburn and Herndon headache sufferer chooses to look into a new diet, Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn is here to talk and decide which diet (if any special one) is proper.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
In much the same way, vitamin D supplementation is presented. Vitamin D deficiency has been documented in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics of vitamin D have opened its supplementation to considered inclusion in the care and prevention of headache and migraine. One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day reduced the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug therapy. More study needs to be completed, but vitamin D supplementation appears promising. (1) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn studies the nutrition of each individual Ashburn and Herndon chiropractic patient and suggests supplementation when appropriate.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all sorts – primary headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are everyday complaints brought to the Ashburn and Herndon chiropractor. Research reported that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga), manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial. In particular, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care, some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported helpful for migraine headache. (4)
