Postural Changes When Wearing Clear Aligners like Invisalign®
Clear teeth aligners and posture!? Now that’s a pair. Not necessarily a pair you would put together though! Ashburn and Herndon teeth aligners are popular now. Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn sees many Ashburn and Herndon chiropractic patients who have chosen to use these new devices to straighten teeth. They are nearly invisible. They are flexible. They come out when the clear aligner wearer wishes to remove them. Wearers acquire some control of the procedure. All is good, and yet the treatment planning like that of Invisalign® is newer technology. Everyone is finding out more about it. Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn had not thought that orthodontic and Ashburn and Herndon chiropractic treatment plans might come in contact with each other. Surprise!
TOOTH ALIGNMENT TREATMENT AND PLANNING
Most Ashburn and Herndon chiropractic patients recall (too well for some!) the classic fixed appliances (braces) used in orthodontics to straighten teeth. Many Ashburn and Herndon orthodontic patients experienced them firsthand! Research shows that in using Invisalign® technology, tooth type and movement are crucial factors to consider when the treatment plan is arranged. Invisalign® technology lets clinicians to forecast tooth positions with high accuracy when done in nonextraction cases, but some of the actual outcomes may differ from those calculations. Most variances were not clinically relevant though. (1) Malocclusion (a misalignment or imprecise relationship of the teeth of the top and bottom teeth when they near each other as the jaws close) changes teeth straightening treatment planning. When comparing Invisalign aligners to conventional fixed appliances for mild to moderate malocclusion issues, they both corrected the condition. Invisalign® wearers completed their care faster (by 5.7 months!). Invisalign® improvement was not as “great” in effectiveness as fixed appliances. (2) One study decided to determine relationships between body posture in the sagittal profile and sagittal jaw position. The mandible (lower jaw) has a greater effect on body posture than other craniofacial parameters, so patients with severe malocclusions need to be extended extra consideration especially if a jaw surgery is being proposed. (3) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn is fine with having the Ashburn and Herndon orthodontists determine this!
TOOTH ALIGNMENT WITH INVISALIGN AND POSTURE
But Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn is fine when called upon to help with any posture issues that arise. A recent study points out that clear, occlusal coverage aligners like Invisalign® may well influence body posture. The upper spine and lower spine sections are affected. After 6 months of wearing these clear aligners, the Kyphosis Angle, the Upper Thoracic Inclination and Pelvic Inclination were modified. It has been said that these clear aligners alter a wearer’s vertical height due to the aligners placement over the teeth and, consequently, stimulate periodontal receptors inhibiting the jaw closing muscles and, quite possibly, changing mandibular posture. (4) Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn is as astonished as our Ashburn and Herndon chiropractic patients with everything that is possible with these clear aligners! Poulin Chiropractic of Herndon and Ashburn is aware of this potential and looks for it in Ashburn and Herndon chiropractic patients who wear these.
